ABILENE, Texas - The McMurry University women's soccer team scored a pair of unanswered second-half goals and then held on for a 2-1 American Southwest Conference win over University of the Ozarks at Wilford Moore Stadium. The win by the War Hawks (3-7, 1-4 ASC) versus the Eagles (3-5-2, 1-4-1 ASC) snapped a five-game skid by McM (decided by a total of six goals).
The teams were unable to create any separation in the first half, playing to a 0-0 score that proved to be statistically even, as well. The War Hawks had six shot attempts in the opening segment, to four for the UO side. Both teams had a pair of corner kicks.
McM goalkeeper Cindy Villisana had all three of her saves in the opening period. Ozark had one first half save and two in the second.
In the 65th minute, McMurry sophomore
Calista Flores took a perfectly-centered pass from
Cristen Lumbreras and redirected the ball into the back of the net, past UO net-minder Kiara Henry. It was Flores' second goal of the season.
Then in the 74th minute of action, it was sophomore
Angelica Navarro converting on a penalty kck attempt, after Lumbreras was fouled hard in the box. It was also Navarro's second goal of 2018, both on penalty kicks.
The War Hawks dominated the final shot stats, out-shooting the Eagles by a 14-7 margin, 5-4 for on-goal tries. McM had eight second-half shot attempts to three for UO.
Sophomore transfer
Sky Reynolds took five shots for McM, with two going on-goal. Lumbreras, Navarro,
Meriah Sikora and Flores had two shot attempts, apiece.
The War Hawks will travel to Jackson, Miss., to face Belhaven University next Thursday (Oct. 4), with a 5 p.m. kickoff.
