JACKSON, Miss. – McMurry University Women's Soccer recorded its second consecutive win Thursday evening, defeating Belhaven University, 2-0, in American Southwest Conference action.
The War Hawks (4-7, 2-3 ASC) posted their first shutout of the season, as sophomore goalkeeper Cindy Villasana recorded three saves in net.
McMurry got the game-winning goal in the 25th minute, when sophomore midfielder Sky Reynolds put back a deflected save off a shot by junior defender Karleigh Alsip. The War Hawks added to their lead early in the second half, when freshman midfielder Tagan Hansen found the back of the net to give McMurry a 2-0 lead.
"I'm really proud of the girls to get their first shutout of the year," Head Coach Charles Nobles said. "We have been stressing set pieces and defensive organization a lot and the hard work paid off."
The War Hawks outshot the Blazers (1-9-1, 1-5 ASC) 19-3, including 9-3 in shots on goal. Reynolds and Hansen led the War Hawks with four and three shots, respectively, and each had two shots on goal.
"Belhaven is very good team and very well coached. We knew it would be difficult to come here and win, but the relentlessness of our girls really showed tonight!" Nobles exclaimed.
McMurry also had the edge in corner kicks, 7-2.
The War Hawks are back in action Saturday at Louisiana College at noon.
