Wild West Showdown on tap for McMurry Volleyball

ABILENE, Texas – After another strong week, McMurry University Volleyball returns to Kimbrell Arena for an American Southwest Conference West Division showdown with University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Tuesday at 6 p.m.

After taking on the Crusaders for the top spot in the West, the War Hawks will travel to the north side of town to take on Hardin-Simmons University Thursday at 7 p.m. McMurry wraps up the week with a home match against Austin College Saturday at 3 p.m.

Live stats and video links can be found at mcmurrysports.com. Saturday's match against Austin will only have live stats.

NOTES:

Last Week: The War Hawks went 3-1, including 2-1 at the ASC Crossover. McMurry defeated Howard Payne, East Texas Baptist, LeTourneau and was narrowly defeated by UT-Tyler.

West Division up for grabs: Tuesday's match will give the winner the upper hand in the ASC West Division. UMHB leads the division at 5-0, while McMurry is second at 4-0. The teams will meet again October 9 in Belton, Texas. The winner of the West Division hosts this year's ASC tournament.

Justice served: Junior middle blocker Justice McGowan was a force at the net for the War Hawks as she led the team with 40 kills and a .358 attacking percentage last week. She hit .400 at the ASC Crossover, including .545 against ETBU and .478 versus UT-Tyler. Defensively, she accounted for 18 total blocks, seven solo and 11 assisted.

Streak snapped: McMurry's 13-game winning streak to begin the season was snapped in the five set loss to UT-Tyler. It was the second longest streak to begin a season since winning 17-straight to begin 2011.

Top two: McMurry and UMHB are 1-2 in three statistical categories in the ASC. The War Hawks find themselves in the top three of all but one category, overall.

About UMHB: The Crusaders were receiving votes in last week's AVCA top 25. They are 10-1, 5-0 ASC after going 3-0 at last weekend's ASC Crossover. The Cru do not feature a senior on their roster, as sophomore outside hitter Corinne Novak leads the offensive attack along with junior setter Cory Jo Martin.

About HSU: The Cowgirls went 2-1 at last weekend's ASC Crossover, and find themselves at 10-5, 3-3 ASC this season. Senior outside hitter leads the Cowgirls offensively with 2.43 kills per set. The War Hawks won both meetings last season.

About Austin: The War Hawks defeated Austin College 3-1 September 8 at the Austin College Invitational. The Kangaroos are currently 8-6, 3-3 SCAC, and are led by sophomore outside hitter Mayson Kennon. Kennon leads the team in kills per set and is second in digs per set. The 'Roos visit Hardin-Simmons at 11 a.m. Saturday before trekking across town to take on the War Hawks.
