Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Despite Fisher's goal, War Hawks can't reel in the win

LONGVIEW, Texas – Sophomore Emily Fisher gave McMurry University women's soccer an early second-half lead, but it was not enough as host LeTourneau University registered the 2-1 win. The loss dropped the War Hawks to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the American Southwest Conference, while the Yellow Jackets improved to 6-1-1 and 2-1 in the ASC.

It was the second time this season that LETU has defeated the War Hawks on its home turf, albeit by a much closer score than the 4-0 drubbing in a non-conference tilt two weeks ago. In that first meeting, the Yellow Jackets out-shot McM, 9-2, while in the rematch it was the War Hawks owning a 10-7 cushion in shots.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie in the opening 45 minutes. McMurry out-shot LETU by a 5-4 margin and took three corners, compared to one by the Yellow Jackets.

In the second half, Fisher lined up a corner kick from the near side at the 55:49 mark of the match. But rather than send the ball into the mix, Fisher bent the ball inside the far post for her first goal of 2018 to give the McM team the 1-0 lead.

LeTourneau would spoil the War Hawks' upset bid with a par of near-identical goals in the 69th and 76th minutes. Both efforts came off of corner kicks and both were headed past McM goalkeeper Cindy Villisana.

Villisana registered two saves in the match. LETU goalie Mackenzie Wilbanks had three saves of McM shots.

The War Hawks will next face East Texas Baptist University on Saturday (Sept. 22) at  5p.m. in Marshall, Texas.
