SHERMAN, Texas – McMurry University Men's Soccer got a late goal to play to a 1-1 draw at Austin College Friday night in the season opener. Junior midfielder Jesus Sanchez found the back of the net from the right wing on a pass from sophomore defender DJ Jaime in the 83rd minute for the equalizer.
The War Hawks (0-0-1) had multiple chances in overtime including a shot by sophomore forward Jordan Sczech that was saved with just seconds remaining. McM also had a number of chances at the end of regulation to try to steal the victory.
McMurry was playing catchup after the Kangaroos (0-0-1) got on the board first in the 63rd minute on a goal from the top of the box.
On the night, the 'Roos outshot the War Hawks 23-16, including 6-3 in shots on goal. But the War Hawks defense held strong as junior goalkeeper Francisco Avilez amassed five saves.
The draw keeps the all-time series tied at 4-4-1.
McM returns home Sunday for the home opener at Wilford Moore Stadium against Florida National University at 7 p.m.
