BROWNWOOD, Texas - McMurry University men's tennis evened its American Southwest Conference record, thanks to its 9-0 win at Howard Payne University at the Nabers Tennis Center. The win was the fifth shutout of an opponent by the War Hawks (6-8, 1-1 ASC).
A sweep of the doubles matches gave McM a 3-0 lead in the team score. At first line,
Carlos Martinez and
Clayton Pope improved their record as a team to 6-2, thanks to their 8-2 win over Gabe Benitez and Benjamin Blanchard. At second doubles,
Andrew Hallowell and
Cody Aaron also won by an 8-2 score.
Zach Miller and
Joseph Diaz also upped their record to 6-2 on the year, blanking Abe Cooper and David Dingle of HPU, 8-0.
In singles, McMurry won all six matches in straight sets. The sophomore Martinez kept his hot streak going with a 6-2, 6-1 win over the Yellow Jackets' Benitez. Martinez has a team-leading 11-2 record in singles play in 2018.
Pope was a 6-1, 6-2 winner at second line singles and Hallowell won 6-1, 6-0 at third singles. Aaron won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4 and Miller 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Sixth-line singles was won by Diaz, 6-0, 6-1, to cap the match.
