ABILENE, Texas - The McMurry University softball team rallied from an early 6-0 deficit, only to fall short, 11-7, in the series finale versus the University of Texas-Dallas at Red Bud Park. The War Hawks fell to 10-27 overall (7-21 ASC), after being swept by the Comets (22-15, 18-9 ASC).
UTD scored six runs in the second, but just one of them was earned off of McM pitcher
Kamwren Jackson (4-14). The War Hawks got one run back in the bottom of the second, thanks to an RBI double from
Sarah Nagy, only to have the Comets make it 7-1 with a solo home run in the top of the fourth.
In the bottom of that frame, however, McMurry cut into UTD's advantage with a five-run burst. With one out,
Adrienne Nairn singled and
Lexi De La Cruz walked. That was followed by consecutive singles by Nagy,
Ashley McClellan and
Rachel Ripley, before the second out was recorded.
Kayla Otis drew a walk and
Summer Quiroga laced a single, making it 7-6 by the time the dust had settled.
But the Comets would tally a single run in the fifth and three in the sixth to ice the game.
Jackson went the distance in the circle, giving up just six earned runs out of the 11. She had one walk and three strikeouts.
McClellan (2-5), Ripley (2-4), Nairn (2-4) and Nagy (2-4) each had a pair of hits in the game. All four players scored a run, while McClellan, Ripley and Nagy each drove in one run. The War Hawks' Nos. 1-5 batters – McClellan, Ripley,
Nina Hernandez, Otis and Quiroga – had seven of McM's 12 hits as a team.
Ripley – the team's leading batter at .391 – extended her current hitting streak to 17 games. Ripley also had her 13th multi-hit game of the season, as well.
