War Hawks Win Series with UMHB Thanks to Split

BELTON, Texas – McMurry University baseball split its Friday doubleheader at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor – losing 4-1 and winning 14-5 – at Red Murff Field. The win gave the War Hawks (11-23, 6-15 ASC) the series win over the Crusaders.

In game one, McM dropped a tough pitcher's duel, with Stephen Norrell (0-4) going the distance. Norrell went 6.0 innings and struck out four. Norrell did not give up a run until the fourth inning, when UMHB posted a three spot.

McMurry's batters were befuddled until the sixth when Jordan Speck slugged a lead-off home run to left field. McM left two other runners on base in that inning, as well.

Matthew Chalk was 2-for-3 in the game.

In game two, jumped all over host UMHB, leading 9-2 after just three innings. The War Hawks out-hit the Cru, 15-12, and received a solid pitching effort from starter Jack Poe (3-5).

Poe went 7.0 innings and scattered 10 hits. Matthew Bass and Tyler Jenkins each threw an inning of relief to help preserve the win.

Leadoff hitter Mike Gonzales had a big game, going 3-for-6. Gonzales scored twice and drove in four runs.

Chalk also had a big game two, with a 3-for-5 effort, including a double. Chalk scored once and had three RBI.

Nick Hamel also went 3-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in one. Speck was 2-for-5 and Devin Molina 2-for-4.  Blaine McRay had McM's third double in the game.
