McM Takes 2-of-3 from Belhaven

ABILENE, Texas –  McMurry University softball split its American Southwest Conference doubleheader with Belhaven University, winning the opener, 7-6, and dropping the second game, 11-1, at Red Bud Park.  The win gave the War Hawks (7-18, 3-12 ASC) the series win over the Blazers (16-4, 7-3 ASC), who are the No. 3-raned team in the National Christian College Athletic Association.

In the opener, McM had an early 4-0 lead after a big third inning. After the Patriots got a pair of runs back in the fourth to make it 4-2, the War Hawks extended that to 6-2 in the fifth. Nina Hernandez led off with a double down the leftfield line. Kayla Otis then lifter a two-run homer to left center.

In the top of the seventh, UTT chased McM starter Cheyenne West after she gave up four runs in the segment.  Kamwren Jackson came on in relief to get the final out, with the score tied 6-6.

In the bottom of the seventh, Avery McDaniel doubled to center with one out, moving to third on Adrienne Nairn's single. That brought Lexi De La Cruz to the plate. De La Cruz slapped a single through the right side, giving her the walk-off winner when McDaniel trotted home with the go-ahead run, 7-6.

Ashley McClellan, Rachel Ripley, Quiroga and Nairn all went 2-for-4. Otis was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Jackson (3-7) got the win in the circle with 0.2 innings of relief.

Game two was never much in doubt, as the Blazers rolled up 11 runs in the first two innings. McMurry's only run of the game came in the fourth. Quiroga laced a leadoff double, was sacrificed to second and scored on Nairn's ground out.

Jackson (3-8) – who started game two – absorbed the loss. Jackson lasted just 1.1 innings, giving way to Cheyenne West in the second.

McMurry won two of the three meetings in the series, having also won Friday afternoon's game.
