ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's women's tennis team recorded its first victory of the young season with some flair, handing visiting Austin College its first setback of 2018, 5-4, at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The War Hawks improved to 1-4, while the Kangaroos fell to 2-1.
Austin won two of the three doubles matches for the early team score lead.
No. 2 singles was the first of the individual matches off the courts where – in what was probably the most lyrically-themed match – AC's Melody Duong defeated McM's
Symphony Munoz, 6-2, 6-2.
But the War Hawks would erase Austin's 3-1 lead by winning the next three matches off. At No. 3 singles, McM newcomer
Claire Huffine split sets with Chandler Morris, with Huffine taking set on 6-1 and Morris set two, 6-0. In the set three proset, Huffine won by a 10-5 score.
At No. 1 singles,
Samantha Ritz also took a three-setter over Anna Sergiovanni. Dropping set one 6-0, Ritz salted away the win by taking the next two sets, 6-4, 10-8. At No. 5 singles, the War Hawks'
Zayra Gomez made short work of AC's Brenna McCown, 6-1, 6-1 to lead the team score, 4-3.
After the Kangaroos' won No. 6 singles, the match was tied, 4-4, and the team result would come down the No. 4 singles. McM's
Briana Perez and AC's Grace Ortiz split sets – Perez winning 7-5 and Ortiz 4-6 – before Perez was able to wrest set three by a 10-4 tally and put the deciding point in the "W" column for the War Hawks.
