McM's Streak Snapped at UMHB, 89-64

BELTON, Texas – The McMurry University men's basketball team had its three-game win streak snapped, dropping an 89-64 decision at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at the Mayborn Campus Center. The setback put the War Hawks' record at 7-13 overall and 5-8 in the ASC, while the Cru upped their record to 15-6 and 8-5 in the league.

It was the second time this season that the McMurry has lost to UMHB, also losing in Abilene back on January 13.  In the rematch in Belton, the War Hawks trailed wire-to-wire as UMHB got out to a quick start and led at halftime, 44-29.

The Cru created separation from McM thanks in no small part from its free throw shooting.  UMHB made good on 24-of-30 from the charity stripe, while McM managed a 9-for-17 effort.

Senior Aaron Gettys came off of the McMurry bench to lead the team, with 14 points. Gettys was 6-for-9 from the floor, including canning a pair of three-point baskets.

Fellow senior LaRandall Scroggins booked 11 points and had a team-high seven rebounds.  With just 20 seconds left in the first half, Scroggins reached a personal milestone by corralling his 500th career rebound. He also had McM's lone blocked shot of the game

The War Hawks' third double-digit scorer of the game was Mike Williams Jr., who tallied 10 points, after a 4-of-7 shooting night from the field. Williams snagged six rebounds, as well.

Sophomore Luke Stephenson narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Stephenson and sophomore transfer Dedrick Berry Jr. each had three assists for McM. Berry chipped in seven points.

McMurry will next be in action on Saturday (Feb. 3) at Concordia University-Texas, in Austin. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
