CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – McMurry University Men's Basketball couldn't overcome a 19-point second half deficit in 94-81 American Southwest Conference loss to the University of the Ozarks Monday night.
The War Hawks (3-5, 1-2 ASC) rallied to within five points with 7:50 remaining in the game by going on a 22-8 run over the previous six minutes. Sophomore guard Khalil Butler led the War Hawks with eight points during the run, while junior forward Mike Williams Jr. and junior guard Dedrick Berry Jr. each had six points, with Berry knocking down a pair of threes.
However, McMurry couldn't get any closer as they traded baskets with the Eagles (2-5, 1-0 ASC) down the stretch.
McMurry never led in the game, trailing by as many as 17 in the first half. That deficit grew to 19 points before the War Hawks were able to get back in the game.
Williams and junior guard Zacc Carter paced the McMurry offense, with Williams finishing with 18 points and Carter 17. Williams was 6-for-8 from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line and added four rebounds and three steals to his stat line, as well. Sophomore guard Khalil Butler chipped in 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Ozarks dominated the game in the paint, outscoring the War Hawks 52-28. They also had a 35-18 edge in fastbreak points. With the Eagles getting shots at the rim, they shot 56.1 percent overall compared to just 36.4 percent for the War Hawks.
McMurry did, however, have their best night of the season at the charity stripe, hitting 25-of-30 shots for 83.3 percent.
The War Hawks will face the University of Texas at Tyler in their next game Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. in Tyler, Texas.
