Butler and Moreno notch career highs in defeat to Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas – Sophomore guard Khalil Butler scored a career-high 25 points on his way to back-to-back double-doubles, but the McMurry Men's Basketball team couldn't overcome a 26-3 run to close the first half in an 84-73 loss at Schreiner University Friday evening.

The War Hawks (4-7) led the Mountaineers (4-6) 21-14 with 12:36 remaining in the first half, but would only muster a single three-pointer by senior guard Shakur Smith the rest of the half as Schreiner went on a 26-3 run to break the game open. Smith connected on all three of his shots from beyond the arc.

McMurry led by as many as 10 early at 17-7, but was unable to keep up the torrid start. During the stretch, the War Hawks knocked down five of their first seven three-point attempts. Butler and Smith each had two three pointers in the run.

In addition to his career-high 25 points, Butler snagged 12 rebounds for the second consecutive game. He was 10-of-14 from the field, including 5-of-6 from beyond the arc, and added three assists and two steals, as well. Sophomore guard Isaac Moreno was the only other War Hawk to score double figures with a career-high 11 points.

Both teams played the second half nearly even, with the War Hawks getting as close as 57-50 on a three by Moreno.

McMurry was without its two leading scorers in junior forward Mike Williams Jr. and junior guard Zacc Carter.

The War Hawks knocked down a season-high 14 three pointers, shooting 45.2 percent from distance. After shooting just 25.0 percent in the first half, the War Hawks shot 56.7 percent in the second half. The Mountaineers shot 49.2 percent from the floor and 50.0 percent from beyond the arc.

Schreiner had the advantage in points in the paint at 34-20 and bench points, 37-23. The also held a 42-33 advantage on the glass, including 14 offensive rebounds, which led to 12 second chance points.

After the Christmas break, McMurry will visit Abilene Christian University December 29 at 1 p.m.
