ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Men's Basketball dropped its second game over the holiday weekend Saturday, falling 79-56 to Texas Lutheran University at Kimbrell Arena.
The War Hawks (1-3) never led in the game, and were tied only once at 2-2. McMurry trailed 12-8 before the Bulldogs (2-3) used an 11-0 run to break the game open.
McMurry was never able to recover from the run, trailing by as many as 34 points in the second half. The War Hawks' reserves made a final push over the final nine minutes, getting within 19 at 74-55 on a free throw by sophomore guard Khalil Butler, but were unable to inch any closer.
The War Hawks played without senior forward Jordan Jackson, who was averaging 13.3 points and 5.3 rebounds over the first three games.
Junior guards Trevin Ramirez and Zacc Carter led the War Hawks with 11 points apiece, while Butler chipped in 10 points and a team-high six boards.
McMurry once again was able to get to the free throw line, taking 28 attempts. However, the War Hawks converted just 60.7 percent (17-28) at the stripe. The War Hawks also had difficulty guarding the three-point line, as the Bulldogs hit on 50.0 percent of their attempts (10-20).
Texas Lutheran also outshot McMurry 54.7 percent to 35.3 percent from the floor.
The War Hawks continue their nonconference portion of their schedule Monday at Southwestern University, as they take on the Pirates at 7 p.m.
