War Hawks defeated by Schreiner, 92-80

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Men's Basketball couldn't overcome a barrage of three-pointers in a 92-80 setback to Schreiner University Friday night at Kimbrell Arena in its home opener.

The Mountaineers (2-3) shot 52.2 percent from beyond the arc on their way to hitting 12 threes in the game, including seven in the first half. McMurry (1-2) shot only 20.8 percent (5-24) from distance.

After taking an early 2-0 lead, the War Hawks didn't lead again until 44-43 in the second half on a jumper from senior forward Jordan Jackson. The War Hawks extended the lead to three points on a pair of free throws by junior guard Zacc Carter. Carter finished 9-for-9 from the charity stripe on his way to a team-high 21 points.

Schreiner regained the lead at 47-46 and never trailed again. McMurry trailed 59-58 before the Mountaineers hit three-pointers on three consecutive possessions, including three by sophomore forward Matthew Rindahl, who finished with a game-high 27 points.

McMurry attacked the basket all night long and was able to get to the line 37 times. But the War Hawks converted on just 25 of those attempts for 67.6 percent. Schreiner made the most of their opportunities at the line, knocking down 91.7 percent of their attempts (22-24).

The War Hawks were able to get back within nine with four minutes remaining, but were unable to make a final push. Junior forward Mike Williams Jr. tallied a double-double on 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Sophomore guard Colin Taylor also added 11 points, while junior guard Dedrick Berry Jr. and freshman guard Jordan Sherman each chipped in eight.

McMurry shot 42.4 percent from the floor on the evening, while Schreiner hit 49.2 percent of their shots.

The War Hawks have another quick turnaround as they host Texas Lutheran University at 5 p.m. Saturday at Kimbrell Arena. The Bulldogs suffered an 87-63 loss at Hardin-Simmons University Friday night.
