ABILENE, Texas – Despite a 3-0 American Southwest Conference loss to rival and 7th-ranked Hardin-Simmons University at Wilford Moore Stadium Thursday night, the War Hawks are still alive for their first ever ASC Tournament berth.
McMurry would receive a berth should University of the Ozarks lose or tie Saturday versus Louisiana College.
After giving up a goal in the first two minutes off a corner kick, the War Hawks (5-11-1, 3-7-1 ASC), starting nine freshman and sophomores, didn't go down without a fight. McMurry held the Cowgirls (13-1-1, 10-0-1 ASC), without a goal until the final minute of the half.
The War Hawks surrendered a third goal in the second half for the final margin. Although no moral victories, the youthful War Hawks continue to show improvement. The three goals are the lowest amount allowed in 17 meetings. The previous low was six goals allowed three times.
Sophomore Calista Flores had the War Hawks' only two shots, one on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Cindy Villasana had four saves in net.
McMurry concludes the regular season Sunday against Southwestern Adventist University at 2 p.m. at Wilford Moore Stadium.
