McM men forge tie at UMHB, 2-2

BELTON, Texas -  Second half heroics by Rafael Lara and Miguel Esteban Jr. helped the McMurry University men's soccer team forge a 2-2- double-overtime tie at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The tie by the War Hawks (4-7-4, 3-5-2 ASC) with the third-place Crusaders (10-3-1, 6-2-1 ASC) gave the team a much-needed point in the standings and keeps McM alive for an ASC post-season berth, with one match remaining.

McMurry found itself behind the eight ball, trailing 2-0 well into the second half. The Cru built its advantage with goals in the 7th and 31st minutes and looked to be in control of matters.

But that's when Lara, a senior, began his team's comeback. In the 79th minute, Lara slammed a shot past UMHB goalie Travis Aday to cut the deficit to 2-1.  It was Lara's team-leading seventh goal of the season.

Then with just two minutes left to play in regulation, it was Miguel Esteban Jr. knotting matters at 2-2.  Esteban took a throw in from Jesus Sanchez and, after one touch, found the back of the net and sent the contest to overtime.

Neither team was able to tally in the extra stanzas to leave the match as a draw. UMHB managed four shots in the overtime periods, with McM taking two tries. For the match, the Cru held a 20-6 margin in shot attempts.

McM goalkeeper Aidan Keane was credited with five saves. The War Hawks defenders also made a pair of back saves to maintain the score.

McMurry will close out the its 2018 ASC slate at home on Thursday (Oct. 25), hosting Hardin-Simmons University
