Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Second-half surge not enough for War Hawks

ROUND ROCK, Texas – McMurry University women's soccer mounted a second half charge versus Concordia University-Texas, but fell short, 2-1, in the American Southwest Conference match at the Round Rock Complex. The War Hawks fell to 5-9-1 overall and 3-5-1 in the ASC, while the Tornados improved to 6-7 on the year and 5-4 in ASC play.

McM found itself down at the half, 1-0, when CUTX netted a goal in the 27th minute. That score stood until the intermission, as the Tornados held a 6-4 advantage in shot attempts.

Concordia added a second goal in the 63rd minute with McMurry still unable to retaliate on the scoreboard. But still the War Hawks kept the pressure on the CUTX defense, out-shooting the hosts in the second half by a 9-6 margin and 13-12 for the match.

McMurry's efforts finally paid off in the 87th minute. Sophomore Sky Reynold notched her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Reynolds took a pass from teammate Meriah Sikora just outside the box and slammed the ball past CUTX goalkeeper Shelby Franco, into the right corner to cut the deficit to 2-1.

But the War Hawks could not find the equalizer in the waning minutes.

McM net-minder Cindy Villasana was charged with both goals and made four saves on Tornado shots.  Franco had six saves against the McMurry attack.

Reynolds and Sikora each had two shots on-goal. Senor Hannah Way and sophomore Calista Flores each tested Franco once. Way and Flores each had three shot attempts, overall.

McMurry will continue its two-game road trip with a game versus the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday. Match time is slated for 1 p.m. in Belton.
