ABILENE, Texas – Sophomore midfielder Calista Flores found the back of the net off a pass from freshman midfielder Tagan Hansen to give McMurry Women's Soccer a crucial 2-1 double overtime victory over Howard Payne University Saturday evening at Wilford Moore Stadium.
Flores' goal came with just 1:18 remaining in the second overtime, after the teams were scoreless for the previous 75 minutes.
The Yellow Jackets (2-9-1, 2-5-1 ASC) opened the scoring in the eighth minute after beating sophomore goalkeeper Cindy Villasana one-on-one after a misplay by the McMurry defense. But that was all Villasana would surrender, as she recorded three saves on the evening.
The War Hawks (5-8-1, (3-4-1 ASC) evened the match at a goal apiece in the 33rd minute off a corner kick. Sophomore defender Angelica Navarro headed in the kick from sophomore defender Emily Fisher for her third goal of the season.
Fisher was active all night long from the flag, as the War Hawks attempted 13 corner kicks compared to just four for the Yellow Jackets.
After being outshot 6-4 in the first half, the War Hawks went on the offensive in the second half, taking 13 shots while holding the Yellow Jackets to just a single shot. For the match, the War Hawks outshot Howard Payne 19-8, including 12-4 in shots on goal. Flores led the War Hawks with six shots, five on goal. Senior forward Cristen Lumbreras added five shots with four on goal.
McMurry also honored its three seniors, Lumbreras, defender Karen Rocha and midfielder Hannah Way before the match.
A road trip awaits the War Hawks as they head to Concordia Texas Thursday at 5 p.m.
