Volleyball continues homestand with key ASC matches

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball continues its four-game homestand with three American Southwest Conference games this week, beginning Tuesday with a 6 p.m. matchup against Concordia University Texas.

After playing the Tornados, the War Hawks play host to Howard Payne University Friday at 6 p.m., and wrap up the week Saturday against Sul Ross State University at noon.

NOTES:

Last Week: McMurry was defeated 3-0 by the University of Mary Hardin Baylor, but bounced back with a 3-1 win at Hardin-Simmons University and defeated Austin College for the second time this season, 3-0.

ASC West Division: All three games this week are against ASC West Division opponents. McMurry sits in second place at 5-1, trailing 8-0 Mary Hardin-Baylor, while Concordia sits in third place at 5-2. Sul Ross and Howard Payne sit at fifth and sixth in the division, respectively.

Digs leader: Senior libero Odalis Rodriguez leads the ASC in digs per set in conference only games at 4.55 per set.

Record Book Watch: Rodriguez has moved up to second all-time in service aces, as her 28 this season put her at 156 for her career, 43 behind leader Tracee Nielsen. She is also nearing the second spot in career digs. Her 281 digs on the year give her 1,770 for her career, 77 behind Danielle Bolin for second.

About CUTX: The Tornados are riding a five-match winning streak heading into their matchup with the War Hawks. They come into the match 10-7, 5-2 ASC, led by junior middle blocker Marissa Stinson at 3.06 kills per set and a .351 attacking percentage.

About HPU: The War Hawks defeated Howard Payne 3-0 September 18 in Brownwood. The Yellow Jackets are just 2-13 overall, 1-7 ASC, and host Sul Ross Tuesday before traveling to Abilene. Senior middle hitter Zhartaezia Bradley leads the Yellow Jackets offensively with 2.80 kills per set on a .337 attacking percentage.

About SRSU: McMurry topped the Lobos 3-0 on September 14, and they are 3-9 overall, 2-5 ASC in 2018. The Lobos also visit Howard Payne and Hardin-Simmons before taking on the War Hawks. Freshman middle hitter Annika Canaba is averaging 3.85 kills per set to lead the team, which is also tops in the ASC overall.
