BROWNWOOD, Texas - In a clash of the American Southwest Conference West Division upper echelon, McMurry University's women's basketball team came out on the short end of a 75-62 decision versus Howard Payne University at the Brownwood Coliseum. The loss by the War Hawks (10-7, 8-3 ASC) snapped the teams three-game win streak and dropped them a half-game out of first place in the division race.
McMurry was never able to fully recover from a slow start on the road. The War Hawks trailed 17-5 after the first quarter. McM slipped further behind in the second stanza and trailed at the half, 42-25. A third quarter surge got McM to within 11 points, 59-48, heading into the final period. Unfortunately for the War Hawks, they were unable to make any headway in the final quarter.
McM matched the Lady Jackets' inside game, out-scoring HPU in the paint, 30-28. But the largest disparity came in bench scoring, where Howard Payne out-dueled the War Hawks by a 24-5 margin.
