Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Dave Beyer, McM Sports Information Director

Carter, Stephenson Propel War Hawks Back to Win Column

BROWNWOOD, Texas – McMurry University men's basketball used one of its best shooting efforts of the season and some timely defense to score an 83-73 road win versus Howard Payne University at the Brownwood Coliseum.

The victory by the War Hawks (5-12, 4-7 ASC) also snapped the team's nine-game skid. McM head coach Zach Pickelman knows the win was important to his young team.

"I liked our effort from the start," Pickelman said. "Zacc (Carter) and Dedrick (Berry) did a heck of a job defensively against two good players (HPU's Khyce Randall and DeMarcus Hurd). It's always nice to get back in the win column after struggling for a while."

Both teams battled gamely from the outset, as neither was able to enjoy a double-figure lead until the War Hawks did so in the waning minutes. The teams were tied six times and there were eight lead changes in the game.

For the first time this season, McMurry had two players tally 20 or more points in the same game.  Carter and Luke Stephenson each posted 23 points versus the Yellow Jackets (7-11, 3-7 ASC). Carter was an efficient 7-for-9 from the field, 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. Carter was also 7-for-8 on free throws. He grabbed seven rebounds, gave off two assists, had one block and one steal.

Stephenson was 7-for-14 shooting overall and buried 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Stephenson was 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. He had five rebounds and a block, as well.

Senior LaRandall Scroggins chipped in 15 points, going 6-for-11 from the field. Scroggins had a team-leading nine rebounds in his 33 minutes on the floor.

Mike Williams Jr. added seven points and hauled in seven boards. Four points from Aaron Gettys and three from Berry capped the McM scoring.

Pickelman need the strong effort by his starters, too. HPU's bench out-scored the War Hawks' reserves by a 37-12 margin.
