McM Struggles Versus ASC West Leader

ALPINE, Texas – The McMurry University men's basketball team took on the American Southwest Conference West Division leader - Sul Ross State University - on the road and came away with an 88-64 loss at the Gallego Center.   The War Hawks fell to 4-12 overall (3-7 ASC), while the Lobos upped their record to 13-4 (8-1 ASC).

McMurry was unable to disconnect the SRSU long-distance attempts, as the hosts made good on 14-of-30 from beyond the arc (compared to two made by the War Hawks).  McMurry did out-rebound Sul Ross State, 39-37.

Freshman Khalil Butler and sophomore Zacc Carter shared the team lead in scoring with 10 points each.  Butler came of the McMurry bench to hit 4-of-5 from the field. He also was the team's co-leader with five rebounds.

Carter went 4-for-9 from the floor in his 24 minutes on the court. Carter also snagged five boards.

Former Cooper High School product Elijah Johnson, a freshman for McM, chipped in nine points. Junior transfer Jayson Stepter – making his first start for McMurry – tallied seven points and pulled down four rebounds.

Senior LaRandall Scroggins booked six points and five rebounds. Luke Stephenson also scored six points, to go along with four caroms.  Shakur Smith and Mike Williams Jr. each added five points, Dedrick Berry Jr. four and Colin Taylor two to round out the War Hawks' scoring.

Berry had a team-best three assists and two steals.

The War Hawks will try to return to the win column on Saturday versus Howard Payne University (4 p.m.) at the Brownwood Coliseum.
