KEENE, Texas – McMurry University women's soccer evened its season record at 2-2, thanks to its 6-0 shutout of Southwestern Adventist University on the road Thursday evening.
The contest was a late addition to the War Hawks' schedule, after an opponent canceled a game scheduled for next week in Abilene.
McM got all the offense it would need in the 27th and the 31st minutes, when junior
Cristen Lumbreras tallied back-to-back goals. It was Lumbreras' second and third goals of the young season, with
Angelica Navarro and
Courtney Kendrick assisting, respectively.
The duo of
Hannah Werner and
Calista Flores then had a hand – or more accurately a foot – in the War Hawks' next to scores, giving the team a 4-0 halftime cushion. In the 36th minute, Werner tallied her first goal of the year with Flores assisting. Four minutes later, Werner returned the favor by setting up Flores for her first goal of 2017 as the teams heading into the intermission.
Leslie Obregon provided all of McMurry's offense in the second half, netting both of her team's goals. In the 56th minute, Obregon took a ball from Navarro and made it 5-0. In the 63rd minute, Obregon scored unassisted for the final 6-0 score.
As a team, McMurry out-shot Southwestern Adventist by a 31-0 count. The War Hawks put 23 attempts directly on-goal.
Defensively, McMurry left the Knights' offense in the dark the entire evening. Led by
Kaitlyn Roberts,
Shelby Wood and
Peyton Malone, SAU was unable to muster a single shot attempt, with the bulk of the match played in the hosts' end of the field. McM's trio of goalkeepers –
Ashley Ray,
Cindy Villasana and
Jordan Gregory – were credited with the squad's second shutout of the season.
The War Hawks will next be in action on Saturday (Sept. 9) at the University of the Southwest in Hobbs, N.M. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Mountain Time.
