BELTON, Texas – The McMurry University women's tennis team scored a win, with the men's squad losing, in the regular season finale at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The War Hawks won the women's match, 9-0, while the men dropped an 8-1 decision.
McM's women improved to 14-6 overall and 5-1 in the American Southwest Conference, good for second in the ASC West. The men fell to 6-14, 3-3 in the ASC West.
In the women's bout, the War Hawks easily swept through the doubles to take a 3-0 lead in the team score.
Bree Brosig and
Samantha Ritz improved to 12-6 with a win at No. 1, while
Chloe Patterson and
Gabby Camacho upped their record to 11-2 by taking No. 2 doubles.
Zayra Gomez and
Neah Garza won at No. 3.
In singles, the War Hawks did not lose a set. Victorious for McMurry were, in order at the Nos. 1-6 positions: Patterson, Brosig, Ritz, Gomez, Camacho and
Symphony Munoz. Ritz picked up her team-leading 16th win (16-4) in singles play.
On the men's side, McMurry's lone win came at No. 3 singles. Senior
Travis Gough capped his career as a War Hawk with a 3-6, 6-3, 13-11 win over UMHB's Cole Weiss.
McM lost two matches in three sets. At No. 1 singles, where
Carlos Martinez won set one 6-2, but dropped the next two sets 6-0, 6-2 to Scott Wilding. At No. 6 singles,
Zach Miller won his opening set 6-4 over the Crusaders' Alex Mackellar, but lost the final two, 6-3, 10-8.
McMurry's women will play in the National Christian College Athletic Association Central Region Tournament, hosted by McM at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center April 28-29.
