War Hawks Swept by No. 5 UT-Tyler

TYLER, Texas – McMurry University's baseball team lost a doubleheader to NCAA Division III No. 5-ranked University of Texas-Tyler, 12-6 and 4-2, at Irwin Field.  The War Hawks (12-25, 6-15 ASC) dropped all three games in the series to the Patriots (31-5, 19-2).

In the opener, McMurry was out-hit, 12-6, by UTT.  Designated hitter Tyler Jenkins went 2-for-3 and drove in the War Hawks lone run.  After Matthew Chalk led off the third with a double, Jenkins slapped a single up the middle. Jenkins also had a one-out double in the fifth, but was stranded at third.

McM starter Jack Poe (3-5) had a rocky outing. Poe gave up five runs in the first and, after permitting a leadoff double in the second, was done for the day.  He was eventually charged with six earned runs and seven hits.

The second game endured a rain delay, but the War Hawks kept things close versus the high-powered Patriots.  UTT went ahead 3-0 with single runs in the second, third and fourth innings.

In the top of the eighth, the War Hawks mounted an uprising of their own. Mike Gonzales opened the frame with a single and, with Chalk at the plate, went to second on a passed ball. Chalk walked to bring up Jenkins and another passed ball put both runners in scoring position. Jenkins singled to right to drive home Gonzales and Chalk going to third.

Chris Baker then grounded into a 1-6-3 double play. But that was plenty of time for Chalk to come home and make it 3-2. But UTT got one of the runs back in the bottom of the eighth for the 4-2 final score.

John Eric Cortez (2-6) went 5.2 innings and was charged with three earned runs. Cortez gave up six of the Patriots' 12 hits in the game. Reliever Garrett Scudder tossed 1.1 scoreless innings and Aaron Donald gave up a run in his one inning.

Jenkins went 3-for-4 as the only McM player with multiple hits.
