War Hawks Extinguish Blazers, 6-1

ABILENE, Texas – Freshman Angelica Navarro and junior Cristen Lumbreras combined for five goals as McMurry University women's soccer rolled to a 6-1 Homecoming victory over Belhaven University at Wilford Moore Stadium.

The War Hawks (3-9, 1-6 ASC) tallied the first three goals of the evening and led at the half, 4-1, against the Blazers (2-9-1, 1-5 ASC).  Shot totals were fairly close – 10-9 – in favor of McM, with each team putting seven shots on-goal.

However, the War Hawks took better advantage of their shots on-goal, thanks largely to Navarro and Lumbreras. Lumbreras actually delivered all the offense McMurry would need for the evening and do so in close proximity.  Just 18:55 into the match Lumbreras beat BU goalkeeper Alexis McDonald.  Then, just 20 seconds later, Lumbreras netted another goals, with the assist credited to Calista Flores, to make it 2-0.

The goals were the fourth and fifth of the season for Lumbreras.

With a comfortable cushion, Navarro then put some distance between McM and the Blazers with her first collegiate "hat trick."  The first of Navarro's trio of goals came in the 24th minute off a free kick from 35 yards out.

Then – in the 42nd minute and with the score 3-1 – Navarro tallied again before the teams headed to the locker room. Her third goal came in the 59th minute, bending in a corner kick that made it 5-1 and gave her a team-leading seven goals this year.

The War Hawks final score of the match came in the 75th minute from a tandem of freshmen.  Payton Malone set the ball to teammate Briana Pina, who flicked the ball into the back of the net for the final 6-1 score.

Jordan Gregory played the first 76 minutes in goal for McMurry, making three saves and allowing one goal.  Cindy Villasana finished up and also amassed three saves in her 14 minutes of work.
