ABILENE, Texas - McMurry University women's soccer could not hold its early lead in dropping a 2-1 American Southwest Conference match at home to Louisiana College. The War Hawks (2-9, 0-6 ASC) allowed two goals to the Wildcats (1-7-2, 1-5 ASC) in a four-minute span to wipe away the hosts' chance for the victory at Wilford Moore Stadium.
Things looked great for McM early on, as freshman
Angelica Navarro netted her team-leading fourth goal of the season just 3:40 minutes into the match.
Shelby Wood was credited with the assist, as the War Hawks jumped ahead, 1-0.
That score stood until the 31st minute when the Wildcats' Ashlynn Folse blasted in a shot from 18 yards out and to the right of the net to knot matters at 1-1. Then, in the 34th minute, Folse took a pass from Madi Starns and beat McM goalkeeper
Jordan Gregory, flicking the ball in from 15 yards in front.
Neither team would score the rest of the evening, despite a strong offensive attack by McMurry. As a team, the War Hawks out-shot Louisiana College, 19-10 overall and 9-6 on-goal. Navarro had five shots, while
Calista Flores,
Jolyn Noble and
Kaitlyn Roberts each had three shot attempts. Flores and Navarro each had a pair of shots on-goal.
Gregory had four saves and was charged with both LC goals. Wildcats' net-minder Haley Clark had eight saves versus the McM barrage.
The War Hawks will next be in action on Saturday (5 p.m.) at home versus Belhaven University.
