ABILENE, Texas - McMurry University's men's soccer team took on the Concordia University-Texas Tornados on Saturday evening, but it was lightning which had the final say-so, as the teams played to a 1-1 overtime draw. The War Hawks (7-5-3, 4-3-3 ASC) and CUTX endured a 57-minute lightning delay in the first half, but another at the 93:50 minute mark forced officials to call the match.
Neither team scored in opening period. In the 22nd minute, the teams were forced to the locker room for the first delay, only to emerge and finish the half with score on the scoreboard.
At 75:06, McM junior forward
Rafael Lara stole a ball deep in the Tornados half. Lara took a few steps and blasted a shot from 15 yards past CUTX goalkeeper Rob Oakley to put then War Hawks on top.
It was beginning to look as though McM might get another one-goal win, until the Tornados' Joe Abrego spoiled the notion with a goal in the 86th minute to make it 1-1. That score stood through regulation.
Just 3:50 into the first overtime segment, however, it was Mother Nature who got the victory, while the War Hawks and Tornados settled on the tie, following the second lightning warning of the match.
CUTX held a narrow 10-9 advantage in total shots. The Tornados put six shots on-goal, while the War Hawks sent three attempts on the CUTX net.
The match was the final home contest for the War Hawks three seniors:
Matt Hernandez,
Alex Chavez and
Ethan Brown. Chavez had five saves in his last match in the home nets.
