McM Can't Hold the Lead on the Road in 90-71 Setback

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – For the second-consecutive game, the McMurry University women's basketball team was unable to hold on to its halftime lead, dropping a 90-71 decision at the University of the Ozarks. The War Hawks (5-9, 1-5 ASC) found themselves out-scored, 55-30, in the final 20 minutes of the American Southwest Conference cross-divisional game versus the Eagles (7-7, 3-4 ASC).

McM held a 41-35 advantage going into the halftime locker room. After Ozarks jumped out to a 7-2 lead to open the game, the War Hawks battled back to lead, 19-18, after one quarter and extended that cushion in the second.

However, in the final two quarters, the combination of McM's cold shooting – especially in the final period – and the Eagles' red-hot shooting, spelled doom for the visitors.  McMurry hit just 3-of-17 attempts in the fourth quarter, while Ozarks connected on a blistering 77 percent (20-26) in the second half.

UO held a 36-24 advantage for points in the paint for the game.

Junior guard Sham Hunter led the War Hawks with 18 point, hitting 9-of-20 from the field. Hunter also tracked down a team-leading seven rebounds and made a game-leading four steals. She also passed off for three assists.

Newcomer London Weilert added 16 points, including four buckets from three-point range, by connecting on 6-of-13 overall from the floor. In her 27 minutes on the court, Weilert had a team-leading four assists and mad a pair of steals, as well.

The War Hawks' lone senior on the roster – Haley Welch – was the team's final player in double-figure scoring, with 13 points. Welch went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Welch also helped out her team's efforts with six rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Freshman Kaymee Howell came off the bench to contribute eight points.  Amye Templeton and Madison Davis had five points apiece.  Skyler Reyna, five points, and Isabel Carrion, two points, rounded out the scorers for McM.  Reyna and Carrion had five and four rebounds, respectively.
