SHERMAN, Texas – McMurry University's volleyball team opened the 2016 season on Friday, dropping a pair of matches at the Austin College Classic. The War Hawks (0-2) lost their morning contest to Pacific University (Ore.), 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21), and then fell to host Austin College, 3-1 (25-19, 28-30, 25-23, 25-23), in the nightcap.
Freshman
Jordyn Burnell, in her collegiate debut, paced the War Hawks versus Pacific. Burnell registered nine kills and had three blocks, as well as a .294 attack average in 17 attempts. Senor
Katy Headrick added six kills, two aces and two blocks, while freshman
Justice McGowan chipped in five kills. Sophomore
Jasmine Jones and junior transfer
Baylie Barnes each managed five kills, with Barnes also serving two aces
Senior setter
Madison Fatheree had 13 assists and five digs. Sophomore libero
Odalis Rodriguez had 10 digs.
In the evening contest against the Kangaroos (3-1), McM was victimized by its own miscues. The War Hawks had nine serving errors and six ball-handling errors in the four-set match.
A trio of McM players – sophomore transfer
Madison Reed, Headrick and Jones – all registered double-figure kill totals in the loss. Reed pounded out 12 kills and hit .214 on her attacks. Headrick had 11 kills and a sparkling .360 attack average, along with six digs on the defensive side. Jones contributed 10 kills.
Barnes had another solid match with nine kills and eight digs, while Burnell followed with seven kills and three blocks.
Rodriguez had a match-high 26 digs and served up two aces. Fatheree and
Christian Brown notched 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
The War Hawks continue play in the Austin Tourney on Saturday, with matches versus Centenary College (9 a.m.) and Schreiner University (5 p.m.).
