SHERMAN, Texas - McMurry University volleyball won both of its matches on Day 2 of the Austin College Classic, defeating both Centenary College and Schreiner University by identical 3-1 match scores. In both wins, the War Hawks (2-2) lost the first set, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-22 versus the Ladies and 20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 25-23 against the Mountaineers.
Sophomore
Jasmine Jones led the offense versus Centenary, with 13 kills and five blocks. Jones also hit a nifty .400 attack average.
Justice McGowan,
Jordyn Burnell,
Katy Headrick each also had five blocks, with Burnell and Headrick collecting eight kills and McGowan seven.
Madison Reed had nine kills and a pair of blocks.
In all, the McM team registered a total of 12 blocks in the match.
Setters
Emarie James and
Madison Fatheree had 20 and 17 kills, respectively.
Christian Brown led the defensive half with 16 digs, with
Odalis Rodriguez and Headrick with 11 and 10 digs to their credit.
Baylie Barnes served up four of McM's nine aces against CC.
In the Schreiner contest, McMurry collect 13 more aces, led by four from Rodriguez, three by Barnes and two each from Fatheree, Brown and Headrick. Fatheree made 18 assists and Rodriguez 16 "helps." Rodriguez also had a team-leading 17 digs, with Brown adding 16.
The War Hawks had a balanced offensive attack, led nby nine kills from Barnes. Three players – Burnell, Headrick and Reed – each had seven kills. Jones and McGowan chipped in six kills each. McGowan posted six more blocks to her ledger versus SU.
Headrick was named to theAustin College Classic All-Tournament team for her efforts over the weekend.
McMurry will next play its home opener on Tuesday (Sept. 6) versus Concordia University-Texas. The match begins at 6 p.m. in Kimbrell Arena.
