RICHARDSON, Texas – McMurry University women's tennis earned a pair of three-set wins in the final two matches on the court to knock off then University of Texas-Dallas, 5-4. The win improved the War Hawks to 8-9 on the year.
After the three doubles bouts, McM had its back against the wall, trailing 2-1. McMurry's only win in doubles came from the duo of
Bree Brosig and
Savannah McClure at No. 3, 8-1.
Needing a majority of the singles matches to go their way, the War Hawks came through. The Comets won in straight-sets at the Nos. 2 and 4 slots.
But McM returned the favor at nos. 5 and 6 singles.
Madison Hathorn won for the Maroon and White at No. 5 by a 6-0, 6-0 blanking. Freshman
Zayra Gomez then took the 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 6, winning her team-leading 12th singles match of the year.
McMurry still trailed in the team score, 4-3, with
Chloe Patterson at No. 1 and
Samantha Ritz at No. 3 singles still on the court.
Ritz won her first set by a 6-3 score, but dropped the second, 7-5. In the deciding third set, Ritz got the 6-4 victory and knotted the team score at 4-4.
That left just Patterson to determine the outcome of the match for McM. Patterson gained the win in set one, 6-3 and then fell in the second, also by a 6-3 score. The third set went to a tie-breaker, with Patterson scoring a 7-6 (7-5) win that secured the "W" for the War Hawks.
