ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – The McMurry University women's tennis squad battled Belhaven University gamely, but in the end suffered a 6-3 defeat to cap off its four-match road trip. The War Hawks ended the week with an overall record of 5-7, while the Blazers improved to 7-3 in 2016.
BU led in the team tally, 2-1, after doubles play. McMurry's lone win in pairs came at the No. 3 spot, where
Madison Hathorn and
Savannah McClure defeated Belhaven's Ellen Scott and Jennifer Smith, 8-5.
In singles, the Blazers won the Nos. 1-4 matches, with
Chloe Patterson falling at No. 1 to AnneMarie Kimball, 6-3, 6-0.
At No. 2
Bree Brosig lost a tough three-set decision to Natalia Lopez. Brosig took the opening set, 6-2. But Lopez bounced back to take the final two sets, 6-2, 6-4 and win the match.
Samantha Ritz and
Symphony Munoz were defeated in the Nos. 3 and 4 contests.
Hathorn won for the War Hawks at No. 5 singles, with her straight-set win over Mary Lichlyter, 6-4, 6-0. Zayre Gomez was victorious at No. 6 over Caroline Terry, 8-4.
