ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University snapped its three-game losing streak by earning a hard-fought 5-4 win over Austin College at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. The win improved the War Hawks to 2-3, while the Kangaroos fell to 1-2.
All three doubles matches were decided by identical 8-5 scores, with the War Hawks taking two of the bouts. AC won No. 1 singles, but McM bounced back to take the Nos. 2-3 contests. At second doubles,
Bree Brosig and
Samantha Ritz topped the Kangaroos' tandem of Meghan White and Carlye Lide. At No. 3,
Savannah McClure and
Zayra Gomez upped their record to 2-1 by out-dueling Kate Willis and Magan Green.
Taking two-of-three doubles matches proved to be the difference in the match, as the two teams evenly split the six singles matches.
The War Hawks took the Nos. 1 and 2 spots. At No. 1,
Chloe Patterson won a 7-6(5), 6-2 decision over Kirsten Weber. Brosig had a slightly easier time at No. 2, with her 6-3, 6-1 victory over AC's Grace Ortiz.
McM's Ritz fell 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 and
Symphony Munoz lost at No. 4.
The War Hawks' final points came at No. 5 singles, where
Madison Hathorn jumped on the Kangaroos' Willis, 7-5, 6-0. Gomez was defeated at No. 6 line by Lide, 7-5, 6-3.
