McM Comes Up Just Short in Longview, 69-66

LONGVIEW, Texas – A late rally by the McMurry University women's basketball team fell just short in a 69-66 road loss versus LeTourneau University. The War Hawks fell to 2-4, 1-2 in the American Southwest Conference, while the YellowJackets improved to 3-4, 2-1 in the ASC.

The teams battled tooth-and-nail in the first half. LETU led 18-17 after one quarter and McM played the hosts even in the second quarter, trailing 31-30 heading into the locker room for intermission.

However, the YellowJackets would open the second half on with an 12-2 run over the first 4:36 minutes to move out to a 43-32 cushion. LETU would lead by as much as 14 (54-40) in the third period, before heading into the final stanza with a 54-42 bulge.

The YellowJackets would hold that double-digit lead for most of the final period. Trailing by 11 with just over 1 ½ minutes to play, the War Hawks made a final push. Four straight points from Skyler Reyna had McM to within two possessions, 65-59, with 50 seconds left.  LETU still led by seven, 68-61, with 14 tics left on the clock.

The War Hawks' Sarah Doherty canned a three-point basket with nine seconds, followed by a LETU turnover and McM layup by Amye Templeton with six seconds remaining to make it 68-66. McM fouled and LETU made one free throw with five seconds to play. The War Hawks hurried the ball up-court down by three, but could only muster a missed layup attempt as the clock expired.

London Weilert led McM in scoring with 16 points, hitting 5-of-11 from the field and 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. Weilert also had five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Sham Hunter and Reyna both finished with double-doubles. Each tallied 14 points. Reyna had 11 boards and Hunter 10 caroms. Hunter had three assists and a game-leading four steals.

McMurry continues the road trip on Monday at the University of Texas-Tyler.
