ABILENE, Texas - McMurry University Turkish import
Kaan Yilmaz rallied his team to lead a second-half comeback win, 91-82, over Schreiner University. Yilmaz scored 14 of his game-high 25 points in the final 20 minutes, helping the War Hawks (1-1) to their first win of the year by dispatching of the Mountaineers (0-3) at Kimbrell Arena.
Yilmaz, a freshman, also led the McM team with six rebounds and made a game-high three steals. Yilmaz – who was 3-of-11 from the free throw line in the first half – made 4-of-5 charity tosses down the stretch to keep SU at bay and also drained a three pointer with 6:25 left in the game to put the War Hawks ahead for good, 71-68.
Yilmaz was 7-of-14 from the field and went 4-of-9 from three-point range. Yilmaz was limited to 29 minutes due to foul trouble.
In all, five War Hawks tallied in double-digit scoring. Besides Yilmaz, sophomore
LaRandall Scroggins booked 19 points on an 8-for-14 day from the floor. He also had three rebounds, a block and two steals.
Nate Estrada added 11 points.
Calvin McGee and
Zacc Carter had 10 points apiece (Carter's coming off the McM bench). Both McGee and Carter salted away most of their points from the free throw line. McGee was 7-of-8 and Carter 6-of-7.
Estrada had a game-leading six assists and matched Yilmaz's three steals.
Both teams had ample opportunities from the free throw stripe, as the pace of the game slowed to a crawl with a combined 90 free throws (50 for McM) and 74 fouls. Both clubs had 34 free throws made
The Mountaineers out-rebounded McMurry by a 45-29 margin. SU had a distinct advantage for points in the paint (30-16), as well.
The game had seven ties and eight lead changes.
The War Hawks will play their third-consecutive non-conference home game on Monday when it welcomes the University of the Southwest at 5:30 p.m.
