War Hawks Fall in Season Opener at Trinity

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The McMurry University women's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season on a sour note, losing a non-conference road contest at Trinity University, 72-53. The contest was the season opener for both the War Hawks (0-1) and the Tigers (1-0).

The veteran TU squad got off to a fast start against McM, grabbing a 17-9 advantage in the first quarter. McM's task was made even more difficult as freshman Skyler Reyna – the War Hawks' leading scorer in last week's exhibition at ACU – picked up three fouls in the first quarter.

Reyna, after being sidelined the balance of then half, would eventually finish the game with a team-leading 15 points. Reyna hot 6-of-14 from the field and was 2-for-3 from the free throw stripe.  She also had five rebounds and a pair of steals.

The Tigers extended their lead to 42-25 at the half.  TU's largest lead came with seven minutes left in the game when it held a 31-point advantage (66-35).  McMurry out-scored Trinity in the final period – 20-10 – for the final 72-53 score.

While Reyna was the War Hawks' only double-figure scorer, McM's newcomers showed some glimpses of what may be ahead after their collegiate debut.

Sarah Doherty came off the bench to tally eight points by hitting 3-of-5 from the field, including2-for-4 from beyond the arc. Mackenzie Kimball added seven points and pulled down four rebounds in her debut in the Maroon & White.

Returning junior Sham Hunter chipped in five points and six rebounds. Hunter also had a team-leading three assists and two steals, along with a blocked shot.

Newcomers Dakkia Morris and Taylor Koloziej each booked five points, as well. Kaymee Howell came off the McM bench to produce a game-best total of four steals.

McMurry will next be in action on Monday (Nov. 21) at Arlington Baptist College.
