Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late Free Throws Sink McMurry Men, 72-71

JACKSON, Miss. –   A pair of last-second free throws kept McMurry University's men's basketball team from a possible victory and, instead, resulted in a 72-71 setback at Belhaven University. The War Hawks fell to 1-12 overall, while the Blazers upped their record to 2-8 on the year.

McM was nursing a 71-70 lead when the War Hawks' Nate Estrada – who led the team in scoring – was intentionally fouled with 24 seconds left to play.  But Estrada missed the front end of the one-and-one, with BU gaining the rebound and calling a timeout with 19 tics left.

With just one second left, the Blazers' Josh Carpenter drove the lane and Estrada was whistled for a foul, sending Carpenter to the line for two shots. Carpenter canned the first to tie the game and – after a McM timeout – also sank the second free throw, as well as the War Hawks' chances for a victory, 72-71.

McMurry had taken the 71-70 lead with 2:09 left after Aaron Gettys converted the back end of a two-shot foul.

Estrada had 18 points on a 7-for-18 shooting effort that included 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. Estrada also had four of his team's eight assists in the contest.

Senior Chris Cerny canned 3-of-6 from three-point range and was 6-for-11 overall from the floor, on his way to a 15 point night. Sophomore LaRandall Scroggins added 14 points and eight boards.

Gettys narrowly missed a double-double, hauling in a game-leading 11 rebounds and also scoring nine points. Getty's also had half of McM's eight steals as a team.

Romello Robinson booked seven points and Cameron Jackson four points. Thierry Tchenko and Calvin McGee each had two points to round out the War Hawks' scoring.  McGee also contributed six rebounds and three assists.
