ABILENE, Texas – Freshman
Cameron Jackson came off the McMurry University bench to score 14 points and grab nine rebounds, sparking his team to an 81-73 victory over the University of the Ozarks at Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks improved to 2-12 on the year, while then Eagles dropped to 5-4.
Jackson hit 4-of-10 from the field and was 5-of-8 from the free throw stripe, also draining one trey. Jackson also had three assists and three steals in his 24 minutes of work in the win for McM head coach
Zach Pickelman's squad.
Sophomore
LaRandall Scroggins notched his fourth double-double of the year. Scroggins led the War Hawks with 20 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. He hit 8-of-15 shots from the floor and also made three steals.
Junior
Nate Estrada was 7-of-13 shooting – including 3-of-8 from long range – to finish with 17 points. He also dished off three assists and made two thefts.
Sophomore forward
Aaron Gettys' 12 points was McMurry's fourth double-figure scoring game. Gettys was a deft 5-of-9 shooting, while also giving three assists.
Freshman guard
Calvin McGee led McM with six assists and also hauled in five boards.
Zachary Campbell added seven caroms (six on the defensive glass).
Ozarks' Josh Berard banged in a three pointer with 3:37 left to play to put his club on top, 70-68. Berard would finish the game with 36 points.
A pair of Scroggins free throws a few seconds later tied matters at 70-70. A steal by McGee and subsequent layup by Estrada put the War Hawks ahead for good, 72-70, with 2:32 left on the clock. A minute later the Eagles hit one of two free throws to make it 72-71.
But McMurry would out-score Ozarks by a 9-2 count during the final 1:33 to wrap up its second win of the year.
The War Hawk bench shone brightly for Pickelman, out-dueling the Eagles to the tune of 25-0 for the non-starters. For just the second time this season, McM out-rebounded an opponent, holding a 46-38 cushion over the Eagles on the glass.
The win also snapped a 10-game losing skein by McMurry.
The War Hawks will next be in action on Saturday (Jan. 9), hosting the University of Texas at Dallas. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. at Kimbrell Arena.
