MARSHALL, Texas – McMurry University women's tennis split its 2016 opening-day road matches, defeating LeTourneau University, 9-0, in the morning match and losing to East Texas Baptist University, 8-1, in the afternoon bout.
Against LETU, the War Hawks (1-1) plowed through the doubles matches with three wins. In singles, McM was equally dominating, losing just 11 games between the six matches.
The No. 1 doubles team of
Chloe Patterson and
Madison Hathorn won by an 8-4 score, while
Savannah McClure and
Zayra Gomez won 8-2 at No. 2 pairs' play.
Symphony Munoz and
Briana Perez went unblemished at No. 3 doubles, 8-0.
Four of the War Hawks' singles matches resulted in 6-0, 6-0 sweeps. Throwing "double goose eggs" at their LETU foes were Patterson at No. 1 singles, Gomez at No. 4 and Munoz at No. 5.
Perez was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at No. 6 singles.
Bree Brosig (No. 2 singles) and
Samantha Ritz (No. 3 singles) both battled in their first sets to win, 7-5. Likewise, each also won their second sets by 6-0 scores. For Brosig, it was her 10th-consecutive singles victory dating back to 2015.
However, that string came to an end in the afternoon match versus the Tigers, as Brosig lost to Tiffany Stankiewicz at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-4.
Gomez, at No. 6 singles, battled strong for head coach
Mark Hathorn's team at ETBU. She scored the War Hawks' lone victory with a 3-6, 6-2, 11-9 marathon over the Tigers' Mullika Seekhieo.
Ritz came up on the short end of a three-set battle, falling at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
