ALPINE, Texas - McMurry University women's basketball won its second-consecutive game, taking a road victory at Sul Ross State University, 63-57, at Gallego Center. The War Hawks improved to 4-11, while the Lobos fell to 4-12.
Sul Ross scored the first six points of the ball game on their home floor. Senior
Taylor Russell finally got the War Hawks on the board with 4:15 left in the first quarter with a layup that made it 6-2. Russell's bucket would open the flood gate for a 12-0 McM run over the next three minutes.
A three pointer by
Amye Templeton in the midst of the spree put McM on top 8-6, a lead McMurry would never relinquish. A jumper by
Sham Hunter capped the run with 1:29 left in the stanza, making it 12-6.
SRSU finally broke its drought 11 seconds later, 12-8. McM would finish the opening quarter with a 16-10 advantage. The War Hawks extended that cushion slightly in the second quarter to hold the upper hand heading into the locker room, 28-21.
The Lobos shaved a point off of its deficit in the third – scoring the first four points – to trail 41-35 entering the final segment. Both teams put up 22 points in the fourth quarter, as McMurry salted away its fourth win of the year.
McMurry's largest lead of the contest came in with 1:32 left to play, taking a 10-point lead (41-31) on a three-ball from
Kessha Bracy. McM led for 32:51 minutes of the game, as well.
McM's senior combo of Russell and
Sierra Maykus proved unmanageable for the Lobos. Russell finished the game with her 14th-consecutive double-figure scoring game, registering 18 points on a 7-for-16 shooting effort. Russell also narrowly missed her 11th double-double game by grabbing nine rebounds in her 40 minutes on the floor.
Maykus hit 6-of-15 shots overall – 3-for-7 from beyond the arc – on her way to 16 points. Maykus also had two steals.
Sophomore
Sham Hunter also came close to a double-double for the War Hawks. Hunter had a game-leading 11 rebounds and finished with nine points.
Haley Welch and
Chelsie Lail each booked six points, while Bracy had five points. Templeton's three points rounded out McMurry's point total.
The War Hawks held a commanding advantage in rebounding, 42-33. The Lobos shot 43 percent from the field (22-51) as a team, while McM was at nearly 38 percent (23-61).
