ABILENE, Texas – A year ago the McMurry University women's soccer team lost to Howard Payne University twice by identical 3-0 scores. Despite dropping a 2-1 double-overtime decision to the Yellow Jackets in the 2015 season-opening match at Wilford Moore Stadium on Tuesday evening, the War Hawks showed they are team that will battle for the duration.
HPU (1-0) scored first in the 33rd minute of play when, after a great save by War Hawks goalkeeper
Simone Heinle on a direct kick by Courtney Turner, the McM net-minder was unable to control the ball and the Jackets' Brittany Davis was there to slide in the rebound that made it 1-0, as it stood until the halftime intermission.
In all, Heinle would finish her first collegiate start in the nets with eight saves.
In the second half, senior
Holiday Williams scored her 18th career goal, driving the ball past HPU goalie Shelby Spaulding. Williams' tally knotted matters at 1-1, as it remained the balance of regulation and through the first overtime segment.
Just 42 seconds into the second extra period, Turner floated a shot from 20 yards out that stayed just out of Heinle's reach, securing the 2-1 win for HPU.
The Yellow Jackets out-shot McMurry by a 22-4 margin in the contest, with a 10-3 cushion for shots on-goal.
McMurry will next host Jarvis Christian on Saturday (Sept. 5) at 5 p.m.
