BROWNWOOD, Texas – McMurry University's baseball team parlayed an eight-run fourth inning into a 9-6 win at Howard Payne University at Don Shepard Park. The win was the War Hawks' sixth in a row.
McM accumulated half of its 14 hits in that big eighth, alone. Trailing 1-0, a two-run single by designated hitter
Ben Douglas put the War Hawks on top, 2-1. With two out, thirdbaseman
Casey Berryman laced a two RBI double to make it 4-1.
Kyle Sargent followed that with a triple that plated Berryman with the fifth run of the inning.
Christian Simmons singled home Sargent, then scored himself when
Cody Howard - the fifth-consecutive batter to hit safely - smacked a two-run triple to make it 8-1.
Howard also had an RBI double in the sixth for McMurry's ninth run of the game.
After its first inning run, the Yellow Jackets added a single run in the fifth, three in the eighth and one in the ninth. But that was as close as the hosts would get, 9-6.
John Eric Cortez improved to 4-0 with another quality start. Cortez went seven innings, scattering seven hits and allowing two earned runs. He struck out seven and walked just two batters.
Adams had the big game for the War Hawks, going 4-for-5 – two doubles - with three runs scored, as well. Douglas also had three hits, going 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI.
Howard and Sargent each went 2-for-4. Howard drove in three runs and Sargent, two.
