BROWNWOOD, Texas – McMurry women's tennis improved to 14-3 on the year – winning its sixth-straight match – thanks to an 8-1 win on the road at Howard Payne University.
The Yellow Jackets got their only point of the afternoon at No. 1 doubles, where McM's
Dana LeMieux and
Jessica Bentley and HPU's Alex Marlin and Chesney Goza put on a show. Molin and Goza would eventually win a 9-8 (15-13) decision.
At. No. 2 doubles,
Madison Hathorn and
Chloe Patterson rolled HPU's Tiffany Bullock and Deun Mendleson, 8-0. The Yellow Jackets defaulted at third doubles, giving the War Hawks a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
The No. 1 singles bout between McM's Patterson and Marlin. Was an epic struggle, won by Patterson. Marlin took set one, 7-6 (7-5). But the sophomore Pattersongot her 11th win (11-5) of the year by winning the final two sets, 6-1, then 10-3 in the tie-breaking pro-set.
As for the balance of the singles matches, McMurry would win the Nos. 2-5 matches in straight sets and take a default win at No. 6. Winning for the War Hawks was, in order: LeMieux, Bentley,
Bree Brosig,
Gabby Camacho and Hathorn. Brosig is now 16-1 on the year, Camacho 13-3 and Hathorn 12-4.
The War Hawks close the regular season on Saturday with a match at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
