ORLANDO, Fla. – McMurry University's women's tennis team split its matches in Orlando on Tuesday, losing to Aquinas College (Mich.), 5-4, and defeating Methodist University (N.C.), 6-3. The War Hawks are now 8-2 in 2015.
In its first match of the day versus Aquinas, the McM women took a 2-1 lead in the team score by winning the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles bouts. Sophomores
Chloe Patterson and
Madison Hathorn defeated the Saints' duo of Daniella Zuniga and Anna Musienko, 8-5, at second doubles.
Then, at third doubles,
Bree Brosig and
Gabby Camacho took down AC's Marjeanne Bothma and Jenelle Miller, 8-2. The War Hawks' No. 1 doubles tandem of
Jessica Bentley and
Dana LeMieux lost a hard-fought, 9-7, match.
Brosig and Camacho also got McMurry its only singles wins, taking the Nos. 4 and 6 matches, respectively. Brosig won in straight sets over Musienko, 7-5, 6-0. Camacho defeated AC's Miller, 6-2, 6-1, but the Saints would win the other five singles contests to secure the team win.
The War Hawks' strong doubles play got the club out to a fast start against Methodist in the nightcap match, as McM swept all three contests versus the Monarchs. At No. 1, Bentley and LeMieux won, 8-0. Patterson and Hathorn battled to an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles, followed by an 8-5 win by the Brosig-Camacho tandem at No. 3.
The two teams split the six singles contests, with the War Hawks taking the Nos. 1, 3 and 4 matches. Patterson was victorious at No. 1 in straight sets over Sam Munze, 6-0, 6-3. Bentley also dispatched of MU's Davi Barbour in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3, and likewise for Brosig at No. 4, 6-2, 6-0 over the Monarchs' Stephanie Hunter.
McMurry's win might have been even more lopsided had LeMieux and Camacho been able to pull out losses to MU, which both went to third sets. LeMieux lost 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 10-7 and Camacho fell by a 6-2, 0-6, 10-7 score.
