ABILENE, Texas - McMurry University's men's basketball team won a convincing decision over Southwestern Adventist University, 81-57, at Kimbrell Arena. With the victory, the War Hawks (6-16) avenged an earlier loss to the Knights.
SWAU was swamped by McM in the first half. The War Hawks amassed a 51-16 lead by the intermission. The Knights out-scored the War Hawks in the second half – 41-30 – when the game was already well in hand for McM.
McMurry held a huge advantage for scoring in the paint -50-26 – thanks largely to the stellar play of senior
Connor Robinson. The Knights did not have an answer for Robinson, who notched his 15th-consecutive game with double-digit scoring (19th overall) and his eighth game with 30-plus points scored (including three straight). Robinson hit 13-of-19 shots from the floor and was 6-for-6 from the free throw line. He grabbed six rebounds and passed off four assists, as well.
Fellow senior
Alex Lewis booked 10 points – with several acrobatic dunks – and pulled down five rebounds. Lewis also had a game-high nine assists and two thefts. Sophomore guard
Thierry Tchenko had 10 points, as well and snared eight rebounds.
Hondo Webb, also a senior, pulled down eight rebounds and tallied five points. Freshman
LaRandall Scroggins had seven points and
Aaron Gettys six points.
The victory also snapped a nine-game losing streak by McM. The War Hawks last won on January 9 versus Valley City State at the Johnson and Wales Tournament in Denver, Colo.
McM will close its season next Wednesday (Feb. 25) at home versus Tarleton State University at 8 p.m.
