Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Dave Beyer, McM Sports Information Director

War Hawks Done in by Patriots' Long-Range Game

ABILENE, Texas-  The McMurry women's basketball team found itself buried by an avalanche of long-range baskets by visiting University of Texas-Tyler, falling 82-45 at Kimbrell Arena.

The War Hawks (1-6) seemingly had no answer for the Patriots' (6-0) three-point shooting, as UTT buried 13 treys in the game. Overall, UTT hit 44 percent (28-64) from the field, while McM converted on 30 percent (16-53) of its shots.

After staying within striking distance – trailing 18-11 – after one quarter, the War Hawks saw things slip away in the second. The Patriots out-scored McMurry in the period, 24-3, and carried a 42-14 cushion into the halftime locker room.

The War Hawks were also victims of their own miscues by committing 28 turnovers, which resulted in 46 points for UTT. The Patriots deep bench was able to out-score McMurry's, as well, 19-4.

Senior Taylor Russell led the War Hawks, registering her fourth double-double of the season. Russell scored 18 points – including going 8-for-9 from the free throw line – and pulled down a game-leading 10 rebounds. Russell also had three steals, two blocks and two assists.

Russell has scored in double figures in six-consecutive games and has double-digit rebounds in five of seven contests.

Junior Haley Welch added 12 points, to go along with three assists and three steals.  Senior Sierra Maykus went 4-for-10 from the floor and had nine points, as well as four assists and two steals.

Freshman Chelsie Lail (4 points) and sophomore Sham Hunter (2 points) were the only other players to score for head coach Brittany Densman-Roes' squad.  Hunter had six boards, two assists, two steals and a block.

The War Hawks will try to snap their two-game skid on Monday when they travel to Dallas Christian College for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
