ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's women's basketball team struggled early and could not recover in time to avoid a 75-52 home loss to LeTourneau University at Kimbrell Arena. The War Hawks fell to 1-5, while the YellowJackets Improved to 5-3.
McM trailed 19-8 after one quarter and found itself down 33-20 at the half. The YellowJackets expanded their lead to 51-28 after three segments, but played LeTU even in the fourth (with each team tallying 24 points).
McMurry was out-shot from the field by a 48 percent (30-62) to 32 percent (20-62) margin by LeTourneau. LeTU drained 11 three-point baskets, while the War Hawks netted just two. LeTourneau won the rebounds battle, 43-37.
Senior
Taylor Russell led McMurry with 16 points and narrowly missed a double-double by pulling down nine rebounds. Russell played every minute of the game for McM, making good on 5-of-13 from the field and 6-of-7 free throws.
Sophomore
Sham Hunter did complete the double-double by scoring 10 points and corralling 13 rebounds. Hunter hit 4-of-8 from the floor and also had a team-leading four rebounds and three steals.
Senior
Sierra Maykus was the third McM player in double-figure scoring with 11 points. Maykus made 4-of-10 from the field.
Fellow senior
Tayler Boroson had seven points off McMurry's bench.
Alex McIntosh and
Chelsie Lail each contributed four points.
