ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University's men's basketball team could not hold on to a big second half lead and suffered an 83-74 loss at home versus L:eTourneau University at Kimbrell Arena. The loss dropped the War Hawks to 1-6, while the YellowJackets improved to 3-5.
McMurry led at the half, 44-31, and upped its lead to 15 points – 46-31 – within the first minute of the second half. However, after that point LeTU began to chip away at the McM advantage, going on a 27-10 run over the next 8 ½ minutes and overtaking the War Hawks for good (58-56) with 10:46 left to play. McM would get no closer than four points the rest of the way.
McM's
LaRandall Scroggins led all scorers with 18 points. Scroggins was 8-for-15 from the floor and also paced the War Hawks with seven rebounds.
Junior
Nate Estrada was close behind with 16 points, going 5-for-11 from the field, 4-of-7 coming from beyond the three-point line. Junior
Thierry Tchenko added 14 points (4-of-9), thanks to a perfect 6-for-6 effort from the free throw stripe. Tchenko also had a game-high five assists.
Senior
Chris Cerny had another quality game off the McM bench, tallying 13 points on a 5-of-7 night shooting from the floor. Cerny canned 3-of-4 from long range, as well.
Blake Cochran buried a pair of treys for his six points.
Romelo Robinson booked three points, with
Aaron Gettys and
Gabriel Chacon credited with two points apiece.
Both teams shot well, with McMurry hitting 45 percent (27-60) and the YellowJackets 44 percent (27-61).
